DJ Andy Smith's Freestyle Mix

A 19 track alternative rap/hip-hop album (1h 6m 16s) — released October 2nd 2006 on Freestyle Records

With a career under his belt that takes in sample sourcing for the Mercury Music Prize winning Portishead, creating the hugely popular "Document" mix series, numerous other compilations (from Northern Soul to Reggae), a packed global DJ diary, performing live alongside Boca 45 as Dynamo Productions aswell as being one of the most prolific and eclectic DJs the UK has to offer, it seemed only right that Andy would be the person Freestyle chose for their first ever "Freestyle Mix". The eclectic mix of sounds contained on this CD is a wonderful homage to the DJ's broad tastes and obviously there couldn't be a better label for Andy to demonstrate his talents as an eclectic DJ. Focusing on the modern funk side of things, with a side helping of latin and soul, Andy has created another monster mix CD - perfect for listening to in your home, car, on your ipod or even to liven up a flagging house party! The CD opens with 'Sounds Start Rockin' - amazingly Andy's first foray into solo production - available on 12" soon! From herein it takes a number of twists and turns, with numerous shouts and drops from Andy's own vaults. As another exclusive "Freestyle Mash-up" is exactly that - a cut and paste mash-up of Freestyle past hits - never to be released anywhere else!!

Compilation king Andy Smith, fresh from his Trojan Sessions opus, delivers yet again with a killer line up of funk fuelled bangers from the Freestyle repertoire, bringing artists as diverse as Aphletik and Flow Dynamics together with T.J. Chill and the South Bronx Community Youth Project. Absolutely Funk-tastic - but you wouldn't expect anything less from Andy, now would you? - One Week To Live

Andy Smith's mix CD credentials need little introduction thanks to the wildly eclectic The Document series that fused rare grooves with fresh dope beats. For this latest mix project though he focuses more strictly on a modern selection of funk, hip hop and soul from Adrian Gibson's acclaimed Freestyle label. Though the average listener will recognise few of the artists included here (bar, perhaps, rising funk band The New Mastersounds), the quality threshold is never compromised; and just like the aforementioned series this release is both entertaining and educating. The Freestyle Mix also features Smith's first solo production, the rolling breaks and bass of 'Sounds Start Rockin', which is sure to be a sought-after wax on its release, while the album itself is excellently programmed and cut, giving the feel of a live DJ set, right down to the 'one more' tease at the end. - IDJ
