| Kudos New Releases 6th March (First Word, Deep Medi, Research, Editions Mego, Zehra, Diskotopia, Last Resort, Record Kicks) |
Friday afternoon means but one thing, the eagerly anticipated landing of the Kudos New Releases mailout in your inboxes. There's plenty to get your ears round this week, so the less of my waffle the better. Here's what's shipping this week.
On the albums front we have Big Yawn comin' straight outta Melbourne on Research Records. Combining a host of influences from big beat to early Hessle-style UK bass via dub techno and Street Fighter Riddim this album wears its heart on it's sleeve without sounding contrite.
Bristol's Memotone is known for his previous work Black Acre, Bedouin and Brownswood as well as his membership of Bokeh-associated West Country gabba collective Avon Terror Corps. Here he changes tack into a somewhat friendlier mode, with this beguiling downtempo album on Diskotopia that will appeal to fans of Nurse With Wound, Sakamoto, Delia Derbyshire as well as Bristol OG's.
The Master Musicians of Joujouka's essential 1992 album Apocalypse Across the Sky comes to vinyl for the first time courtesy of Zehra, sure to fly.
Recorded exclusively on Monday evenings, Lemon Quartet came together in the American mid-west to create this eight track meditative album. One for chilled summer evenings, this will find fans in anyone who enjoyed Lemon Quartet member GS Schray's prior albums on Last Resort as well as those looking for an album they can spend some time losing themselves in.
Further albums include Japanese Afro-groovers Ajate returning to 180 Gram, Alex Puddu going disco on Schema, Bluestaeb & S.Fidelity teaming up on Menace, Jasmine Gifford investigating sound surveillance on Editions Mego and some lost 80's Israeli electronica on Fortuna plus releases from African Roadtrip, Mutual Intentions, Indigo Soul and Jakarta.
12"s this week sees Two Shell with a hot hand-stamped white label of deadly Steve Gurley-via-So Solid Crew steppers UK techno that's been getting played by anyone who's anyone, including Ben UFO, Peach, Peverelist, Joe, Avalon Emerson... too many to name really. A proper hearty "TIP!" on this one, for sure.
We've also got some remixes from the recent Myele Manzanza album on First Word, including one by none other than the don himself, Theo Parrish, as well as strong efforts from Mark de Clive Lowe and Darkhouse Family. There's also a new Deep Medi ready to go, Somah delivering four new tracks influenced by DMZ & Skream.
There's also 12"s from Butter Sessions with tracks from Physical Therapy and Serpent amongst the highlights on that one, there's also some tasty back cat bits in from Banoffee Pies as well as releases on Vessel and Compost.
