Passages
A 5 track leftfield/idm ep (23m 37s) — released June 21st 2024 on Accidental Jnr
Accidental Jnr's Room 2 stream welcomes seasoned Finnish producer Arttu Snellman into the back room for a new EP of dislocated techno-not-techno under a new alias, Hahmo.
From his early days exploring limber, dub-soaked minimal as Lump through to the boxy hardware pneumatics of his Arttu output, Snellman has pushed a vibrant personality through his productions both on and off the dancefloor. In his first solo output in more than 7 years, the Auckland-basedartist offers an introspective window into his process, conjuring the feeling only improvised, late-night studio sessions can bring. The location of the sessions shifts, but the allure of electronic instruments pulsing in unison remains the same wherever the jam takes place.
On Passages there are pronounced rhythmical moments such as 'Barrier', but there's a noticeable swerve away from the domineering thump of a kick drum to leave more space for richly textured, slithering percussion from less conventional sources. It wouldn't be right to call beatless track 'Planets Not Planets' ambient, simply due to the kinetic motion of the mid-range tone and weighty bass. Echoes of Snellman's dub past manifest in 'Passages', while 'Phy' and 'Kvantit' revel in shifting sands of melody and texture. Throughout, a restless energy interferes with the solemn nocturnal atmosphere — decidedly un-horizontal chill-out music perfect for Room 2.
'All of the Hahmo tracks have started as an experiment. Improvised late night sessions with different hardware setups in various locations.
Music born out of love of exploring sound and the pulsing interaction of linked up electronic instruments.'
'Sometimes abstract, other times melodic - this is the sound of Hahmo. Let the music take you to different worlds.'
