Bonus Beats - Rare & Unreleased Finnish Electro 1990 - 2002
A 12 track electro album (58m 10s) — released February 7th 2025 on Cold Blow Records
Cold Blow proudly presents Bonus Beats: Rare & Unreleased Finnish Electro 1990–2002, a double-LP unearthing 12 tracks (9 rare and 3 previously unreleased) that capture the burst of creativity defining Finland's fledgling electronic underground scene at the turn of the millennium. Emerging in the late 1990s, Finland's electro movement drew inspiration from Detroit, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands. Rooted in a DIY ethos, artists released home-grown tracks on small labels, creating rare underground gems now ready for rediscovery.
Curated with care by Erkko Lehtinen, a key figure in Finland's electro scene, the compilation showcases varied sounds, from early techno influences to robotic allure and dark, bass-heavy tracks. Highlights include unreleased dark electro cuts by Decepticons and Dr. Robotnik, with the latter delving into minimal wave territory, and a striking industrial-tinged collaboration by Feng Shui feat. Monsieur, featuring members of Huoratron, Nu Science, Polytron, and Op:l Bastards. Paying tribute to Perttu Häkkinen (aka Randy Barracuda), Imatran Voima's bass-heavy anthem from their debut EP keeps his legacy alive. The collection also features Spektor's retro synth experiments, Tero's Commodore 64-crafted tracks, Brothomstates' futuristic soundscapes (later signed to Warp), and a rare Kraftwerk cover of The Model by the shadowy duo Markus & Kristian.
Complete with detailed liner notes by Erkko Lehtinen, this release offers an authentic glimpse into a pivotal era in Finland's electronic music history. Whether you're crate-digging for rarities or exploring the roots of Finnish electro, this double-LP is a cultural artifact not to be missed.
