Cryosphere

A 9 track leftfield/idm ep (45m 46s) — released November 1st 2010 on Boxatunes

Lonan delivers his introductory album as the first release on new Peak District label Boxatunes. He likes to produce in remote locations and this is reflected in the sound of Cryosphere which he admits has been energized by the ambience conjured by certain landscapes. The artists name was inspired by a location in Scotland where Lonan (aka Robert Turnbull) produces music when he's not DJ'ing in and around the Sheffield area. This 9 track album takes influence from the workings of legendary synth pioneers such as Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin, Ciaran Byrne, and Ulrich Schnauss. Melodic riffs, rich pads, guitar loops and field recordings are mixed together with heavy hip hop influenced beats helping create a cinematic style backing track to the dramatic landscapes that surround and inspire him. The album kicks off with 'Cloudbase', a beat heavy opener that breaks into an explosion of crisp sound giving you the sense of ascending through the heavens into pure clarity. In contrast the more somber track, self titled 'Lonan', uses minor tones and strings to create a mood that is more reflective but still constructed around a solid percussive rhythm. 'Cryosphere' (referring to the areas of the earth that are subject to ice, glaciers and permafrost) has a more up-tempo beat that would not sound out of place on the dance floor, but still with the atmospheric build throughout. Each track has a unique feel to it and as Lonan intended the album should be enjoyed whilst thinking of remote and beautiful landscapes.
