I'm A Fool

A 1 track funk single (4m 57s) — released April 25th 2025 on Every Star Records

"I'm A Fool" is the first single by Melbourne 10 piece Funk outfit Mondo Freaks since their EP, Bells Are Ringing, and is a taste of their forthcoming debut album. Returning with another sophisticated Funk gem, the band are proving to be masters of laying down a groove, as the track kicks off with a ropey bassline intertwined twin guitar riffs and is lifted by Jade MacRae's stunning vocal performance. Things get serious in the percussion heavy breakdown, where the groove is stripped down to drums, bass, cowbell and an infectious all-girl chant.

Jade MacRae was inspired to write the song after Mondo Freaks toured Australia with the legendary Evelyn "Champagne" King.

"To sing all the backgrounds on these iconic songs was an honour to say the least and one of the things that really struck me was the connection between Evelyn and her husband Freddie Fox who is also her guitarist. Their love and respect for one another really moved me, they adore each other! When it came to writing I'm A Fool we actually had Evelyn in mind for the lead vocal so I leaned into what I perceived of their love story as the inspiration for the lyric. I was also newly married at the time so the love was feeling real!"

When many RnB acts would be happy to have one great singer, Jade MacRae is just one of five incredible vocalists in Mondo Freaks along with Susie Goble, Francisco Tavares, Aaron Mendoza and Jason Heerah.

Coming out with the track will be the first in a series of live in the studio videos recorded at The Quadrophonic Club, proving that Mondo Freaks wield a force of groove that's just as powerful on stage as it is on record, something that the world beyond the Melbourne Soul scene is now starting to discover. Harvey Sutherland (who contributed two remixes on the recent EP) wasn't exaggerating when he decreed them as "Melbourne Boogie Funk Royalty".

As he did on "Bells Are Ringing", Grammy winner Michael Brauer mixed "I'm A Fool". Brauer made his name mixing '80s Rn'B classics from Change, BBQ Band, Was (Not Was), Gwen Guthrie, Grace Jones, Luther Vandross, Aretha Franklin, Pleasure, Cheryl Lynn, Cerrone, Jones Girls, Kid Creole, Teddy, Morris Day and many more.

Since then he has mainly mixed artists like Coldplay, Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney but he was really excited to work on timeless Rn'B music again when Mondo Freaks sent him their album.

Formed around the rhythm section of in demand session bassist Luke Hodgson and drummer Graeme Pogson (GL, The Bamboos) the band comprises some of the best players in Melbourne's furtive music scene and were requested to back Boogie and Disco legends Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory, Logg, Aleem, Inner Life, and Universal Robot Band) and the Evelyn "Champagne" King on their Australian tours.
