Olas Curativas
A 9 track ambient album (42m 11s) — released December 6th 2024 on Twin System
We are happy to present the new album 'Olas Curativas' from the multi-disciplinary artist Lamina, releasing on Twin System on 06/12/2024.
Lamina is the moniker of French artist Clarice Calvo-Pinsolle. In Basque mythology, the Lamina is half-human, half-animal; a nocturnal creature that lives in caves close to water sources and creeks. In the same way, Lamina's music is swampy and growling, a living and ever-evolving natural habitat. Taking influence from the natural world, works of hydrofeminism, and experiences with hypnotism, on 'Olas Curativas' Lamina sculpts a new ecosystem to explore.
'Olas Curativas' was developed and written in 2022, with these pieces first heard as live jams at shows mainly around Brussels and Portugal, before being honed into this mesmeric full-length LP. The listener is invited to walk through a series of entrancing scenes; each piece a dive into its own world, but always with a little light guiding our path in-between.Calvo-Pinsolle's effective use of manipulated field recordings and tape loops provide a backdrop for harmony that leans towards the mystical, brimming with melodies equal parts haunting and enchanting. The hypnotic nature of the music is complemented by brilliant songwriting; new ideas and tangents greet you at every turn, and Calvo-Pinsolle's skill as a sound-designer is clear in the rich, textural soundscapes throughout.
Hearing the way these pieces flow into one another, and the aquatic qualities of the production, it will come as no surprise that water sources central to these ecosystems are an inspiration. Both in her work as an installation artist, in which water flows through ornate glass sculptures, or in the drifting, flowing soundscapes she composes, we are encouraged to dive into streams, submerge ourselves underwater, or float amongst thousands of bubbles. Each piece of the record is thought of as a wave, entering and enveloping us, resonating within our bodies. Further inspiration for the music on 'Olas Curativas' comes from the realm of hydrofeminism and the writings of Astrida Neimanis, in which ideas surrounding corporeality through water are posed to challenge the view of the body upheld by the Western metaphysical tradition.
Alongside harvesting a sound library over the past several years, Calvo-Pinsolle has developed an approach to composition using field recordings that informs both her musical and sculptural work. These recordings are transformed much like the ceramics seen in the artwork; shaped, chiseled, and transformed into new entities. These ceramics were crafted and painted by Calvo-Pinsolle herself, and hints at this bridge between her two disciplines. Although an expansive realm, throughout Calvo-Pinsolle's output there are consistent moods and qualities that are absolutely distinctive to this artist's creative worldview, and of which 'Olas Curativas' is a perfect encapsulation.
In the words of the artist..
"'Olas Curatives' is Spanish for 'Healing Waves'. This title came to me during a hypnosis session in which I felt waves move through my entire body, gradually healing me. They were soft like velvet, a mass descending from top to bottom, diving inside me, transitioning from shadow to light, leaving more and more space and reviving all the ecosystems of my body."
- Clarice Calvo-Pinsolle
'Olas Curativas' is Lamina's first vinyl release. She has previously released two full-length albums on Orila Records & Complex Holidays, as well as a joint LP with Kitchen Cynics, and a collaboration project with Bear Bones Lay Low under the moniker XAXI. Her discography is fleshed out by various contributions to compilations, including the opening track 'Soupire' on Twin System's 'Tendrils Lurched Purple In The Slush' tape series.
"Blood, bile, intracellular fluid; a small ocean swallowed, a wild wetland in our gut; rivulets forsaken making their way from our insides to out, from watery womb to watery world:
we are bodies of water."
-Astrida Neimanis, Bodies of water
