Bloco Electro is the brainchild of Gavin Lombos. The band takes the concept of a Brazilian drumming group (bloco) and mashes up the rootsy Latin rhythms with other world beats, a generous helping of old skool electro and hip-hop beats and then tops it off with forward thinking electronica. The rules are - everything must be played percussively - no keyboards, no loops, no decks – just drums and some cool technology from v-drums to space-drums. "Live breaks... I think they're fantastic" - Annie Nightingale, Radio 1 The band wowed Radio 1's 'Queen of Breaks', Annie Nightingale at a recent show prompting her to play the demo of Marakatu on her show and to invite them to join her live on her BBC Introducing tour. She has since featured the finished track on her show. Marakatu draws on the traditional Brazilian maracatu rhythm that inspired the classic "Mas Que Nada" mashed up with a stomping Run DMC style electro beat with some grime flavours in the middle break. The Marakatu EP features remixes by label mates Electrohed (electro/breaks), Box And Child (electronica/breaks) and the french group Recycler (breaks) alongside a single version and some 'bonus samba beats' which showcases the percussive 'bloco' side of Bloco Electro.
