Baqua are a brand new signing to exceptional, featuring the combined vocal talents of the delicious Della and musical wizard James Millman. The band are based in Barnstaple, Devon and have risen from the ashes of the late lamented Bluprint, who delivered two albums full of downtempo masterpieces before deciding to go their separate ways. Using the Bluprint influence as their starting point, Baqua have moved on to a much wider musical palette - subtly combining elements of blues, soul, electronics, nu jazz and broken beats to come up with a delightfully different brew. The first EP kicks off with Terrapin Blues, a moody melancholic blues built around a plangent guitar refrain which is just bursting with atmosphere. Moving up a gear, No Regrets takes us to a smoky late night club with Della's sultry vocals centre stage and in the spotlight. Rounding off this selection, we have the no holds barred Riski 88, showing that Baqua are equally at home with up tempo stormers as they are with downtempo moodiness. Riski 88 also showcases the talents of Finn Peters on saxophone. Finn has already carved out an impressive reputation with his own releases (Su Ling, Butterflies).
