Biography:

Cornell Campbell has established his name as one of Jamaica's most iconic and legendary singers, often using his distinct sweet falsetto voiceto convey frustration, soul or despair. With a career spanning an amazing 57 plus years, his musical contribution has remained a strong presence from the foundations of Ska to Rocksteady, Reggae, Rub-a-Dub, Dancehall and beyond. Cornell's singing career began in his local church choir. At age eleven, in 1956, he was introduced to trombonist Rico Rodrigues, who took him to Clemment Dodd's studio (latterly of "Studio One" fame), where he recorded his first single, "My Treasure," backed by founding members of the Skatalites band. Further singles followed as Jamaican music transformed from rhythm & blues to Ska. After a series of solo hits in the early Ska era, Cornell resurfaced as part of the rocksteady harmony trio the Uniques. As the decade ended, he helmed the Eternals,scoring a number of Studio One generated hits including "Queen of the Minstrels" and "Stars," but in 1971 again went solo after teaming with Produced Bunny Lee, a pairing which spotlightedCampbell'sdistinctive falsetto to stunning effect. Embracing the cultural revolution that was taking place in Jamaica in 1975 he shifted from the lovers rock sensibility toward the more explicitly rastafarian approach of records like "Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm" and "Natural Fact," both of which emerged among his biggest hits to date. Later that year, Campbelland Leealso launched "The Gorgon," a boastful smash which yielded a series of hit sequels. The majority of Lee's hit singles featured King Tubby on mixing duty, the accompanying dubwise versions immortalising Cornell as one of the most frequent voices to bounce through Tubby's echo chamber. As the 80's approached Cornell embraced the new Rub-a-dub and later digital dancehall sound with hit singles recorded for Channel 1, Joe Gibbs, King Jammy's and many others. In more recent years Cornell has worked with producers and musicians further afield, including Germany's "Rhythm and Sound" records and most recently touring and recording with acclaimed UK band "Soothsayers".
