Following on from MP3IA's wrought iron recordings, anonymous producer Shadows' debut on the Avian label offers a different take on the distortion aesthetic.
Building slowly from a single high passed drum track, A side Where Is The Only Light warps and snarls in it's opening moments. A 4x4 kick drum is teased, before the recording reveals itself fully as a brooding half time roller. Where Russell might bring his apocalyptic leads to the front of the mix, Shadows buries them under a flurry of crushed electronics. B side Distorted Images works a similar approach - still chaotic and deeply unnerving in tone, but perhaps marginally more rigid in structure. Multi disciplinary native New Yorker Mike Parker heads up remix duties, taking on the B1 to devastating effect. Opening up the original and doing away with most, if not all, periphery sound design - Parker works Distorted Images into an effective subterranean dirge.credits
