Brehy Vlny

Daniel Kordik made Brehy vlny (Shores of a Wave) with Slovakia's southernmost bend of the Danube in mind. The Danube is ever extensive and animated, but there the better part of the river is made by its surroundings – the disappearing floodplain forests flanking the water.

Daniel Kordik would have made this album with the sounds of these river banks. He had clipped the mics to the branches of willows whose leaves flapped in the wind tracing the river littered with sunspots.

Daniel Kordik lost all the recordings he made at this southern boundary between the Danube and its woodlands.

Daniel Kordik made Brehy vlny an album about the vicissitudes of things. The waves peal. There is a dirge for the last steamer on the Danube executed as a coy rustling recollection of music from two decades ago (Parny pochod). An opening track that is a laminate of clinically aquatic sines. A concluding composition – an ode to sunrise and to how light travels on the river – that, halfway through, turns into rave music and the rave slaps.

Daniel Kordik made these four compositions on commission from Rádio Devín, where they premiered on August 20, 2021. He titled the collection Brehy vlny, based on the idea that every wave is entrapped by its shores.
Daniel Kordik, also known as Iskra, is one half of Jamka, member of the Urbsounds Collective, and Brehy vlny is his first release on the sentimental label Weltschmerzen.
