Butterfly Room

A 1 track alternative single (1m 55s) — released August 6th 2021 on Gare du Nord Records

'Butterfly Room' is the first single from Shattercones' EP 'This Septic Isle'.

Shattercones are Arran Goodchild (drums, machines, synth), Jason Powdrill (lead vocals, guitar), Dermot Watson (guitar, lapsteel) and Neil Walsh (viola, synth). The band was formed by accident (late 2018) when Arran needed to put some musicians together for the Twin Peaks festival.

Their blend of filmic drone, spaghetti western gothic and nightmare slo-mo surf music has hints and influences from Tom Waits to Einstürzende Neubauten, via primal Nick Cave dramatics and the twisted swagger of a kind of post-apocalyptic Doors.

'Butterfly Room' is a dense and dizzying assault to the senses. Blunt and immediate, it's a smash-and-grab mix of sawing viola, guitar clang and zip-wire drones topped with pummelling percussion. Cryptic spoken-word verses give way to a chorus that sounds like a crowded seance, feverish and borderline-hilarious as it passes the finish line in less than 120 seconds and comes to a dead stop.

A slow march of sadness and would not be out of place as the wallowing soundtrack in a western movie. - The Other Side Previous EP review

You can hear the sound of acts like Tindersticks, albeit with a heavier gothic country bent, as the song drifts and staggers across a desert landscape of sombre resignation. - Post to Wire Previous EP review
