When the Magic Went Wrong
A 12 track baroque pop album (36m 47s) — released July 22nd 2022 on Gare du Nord Records
Songwriting collaboration between Ian Button (Papernut Cambridge) and art historian Scott Thomas Buckle, based upon a collection of barely plausible short stories involving ill-fated magic act Toni Tubna, whose ambition and bad judgement leads him into encounters with the darker side of showbiz, crime and the occult.
The unlikely writing partnership has generated a concept album of progressive psychedelic pop, mixed with dark oompah, mod tango, chamber rock 'n' roll drama and haunted folk, flavoured with narrative and oblique imagery taken from Button's original stories.
Toni Tubna is the album's main protagonist, accompanied by the equally ambiguous Stockholm Tuba Sect, a mythic-ghost orchestra whose services are rumoured to have been enlisted after a chance encounter with Toni's manager in a Swedish sauna.
..something in the tradition of The Kinks, Pretty Things or even early Floyd.....this world of eccentricity is soundtracked by music that stradles lightly psychedelic whimsy and melodic pop songcraft.... - Shindig! Magazine Album Review
It’s normally only Luke Haines who releases odd, whimsical psychedelic concept albums like this. It’s like a Tales of the Unexpected meets the Kinks with the genteel but dark Englishness of an Ealing comedy. - Louder Than War Album Review
The Idle Race and Bonzos share the stage with Squeeze and Cockney Rebel on these magical shaggy dog tales made for a generation or two brought up on the idiosyncratic humour of an underwhelming cabaret act, episodes of Paul Daniel’s Magic Show and TV shows in the 80s (Bergerac for one). Fondly remembered, nostalgic pleasures prove fertile ground for vaguely reminiscent tunes and conceptual work of fun. - Monolith Cocktail Album Review
