Afraid to Dance

A 3 track alternative ep (9m 38s) — released October 4th 2019 on Gare du Nord Records

Good Canary is the project of London (originally Plymouth) songwriter Frances Salter. Following a series of singles in 2018, Salter has teamed up with producer Grace Banks (Let's Eat Grandma, Marika Hackman etc) to release her first EP Afraid to Dance through Gare du Nord.

The EP features two tracks made in collaboration with Banks, plus a live solo track. Salter and Banks' co-production cooks up a mix of crashing electronica beats and synth driven undercurrents beneath the vocal hooks and off-kilter drama of Salter's melodies and hooks, with lyrics that range from political satire to feminist rewrites of Ovid. The live track "Internet Friend" shows a different side to Good Canary with it's stripped-down cabaret-style piano and vocal delivery.

Good Canary has been compared in the past to St Vincent, Regina Spector and Kate Bush - but there are also hints at some of the more artful understated theatrics of, say, Peter Hammill.

“I have to say, it’s rather good!” - Tom Robinson BBC 6 Music

Fans and commentators alike are likely to be seduced by this understatedly passionate piano pop, and the more you listen to her, the more the elegance of her music makes itself apparent. - Nightshift Magazine Previous review
