Outstairs Instairs
A 11 track pop album (42m 37s) — released July 26th 2019 on Gare du Nord Records
Initially released in 2018 as a series of monthly singles, remixes and extras, Outstairs Instairs is now available digitally in its original edited album format.
For this collection of songs and recordings, leader Ian Button and Papernut regulars Darren Hayman, Roberts Rotifer & Halcrow, Ralegh Long, Jack Hayter and Emma Winston are joined on various tracks by a range of guests and friends including Terry Miles (Go-Kart Mozart, Denim, McAlmont & Butler) and Luke Smith both on piano, Malcolm Doherty (Rumer, Holy Holy, Daphne Guinness) on recorder arrangements, Sterling Roswell on synth, and Stabbs MacKenzie on sax.
Outstairs Instairs takes its title from inventor/architect Richard Buckminster Fuller's idea for a more astronomically accurate way of describing going up or down stairs i.e. outwards from the centre of the earth, or inwards towards it. Fuller himself - or at least the C60 molecule named after him – is namechecked in the album's opening/closing track.
By turns catchy, intimate and beguiling.....like a C86 version of The Faces...a bedsit Bowie... - Shindig! Album Review
....Little vignettes evoking a time past, but never dwelling......Cementing their place as treasures of the British psych scene, Papernut Cambridge hit a home run with this excellent album. - Echoes and Dust Album Review
‘Outstairs Instairs’ blends the sounds of 1970s pop with the moods and motivations of the 1960s......other worldly yet hummable, psychedelia without the psychedelic drugs, glam rock without the fear of being beaten up....there is no sense that he is sending up pop music or turning it into a cryptic joke. This is an affectionate re-imagination of the sounds of the 1970s. - Pennyblack Music Album Review
Papernut Cambridge weave their icons and cerebral pinings into articulate hazy pop...like a mongrel-breed of the Alex Harvey Band, Wings and Marmalade....Highway 61 Revisited Dylan fronts The Soup Dragons...A most magnificent return from a most maverick of outfits. - Monolith Cocktail Album Review
